Bronze statuette with Charon, the psycopomp in Greek Mythology
In Greek Mythology, Charon is a psychopomp, the ferryman of Hades. Charos carries the deceased through the river Acheron that divides the world of the living from the world of the dead. According to the myth, a coin to pay Charon for passage, usually was an obolus, was placed in or on the mouth of the dead person. For those who could not pay the fee or their bodies were left unburied, had to wander to the shores of Acheron river for hundred years until they were allowed to pass to the Underworld.
